Territorial in-fighting is resulting in the production of a plurality of guidelines that confuse clinicians, two US endocrinologists have argued in The Lancet.
“The hard truth is that an organisation needs to justify its own role and existence in relation to other organisations that serve the same function. This need means that a guideline all too easily becomes an assertion of authority,” wrote Professors Richard Kahn and Edwin Gale.
“Although the universal assumption has been that guidelines are written for the benefit of their recipients, few have dared to mention that they also serve a vital function for the organisation that produces them.”
