Australia's peak radiology body is worried the risks of ionising radiation have been blown out of proportion, deterring patients from necessary CT scans.
In a position statement released last week, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists said recent reports "sensationalising" the risks of CT could potentially cause more harm than the radiation itself, "by deterring people from undergoing medically indicated CT".
For appropriately justified and optimised CT examinations, the benefits of CT imaging to an individual substantially outweigh the risks," the statement said.
