AMA puts forward rival diabetes scheme

The Federal Government has been told to ditch its diabetes fundholding policy for GP practices, with the AMA releasing its own plans to improve the care of patients with complex and chronic disease.
Backed with $436 million, the government wants to pay practices annual lump sums to care for patients with diabetes instead of giving them access to the usual GP fee-for-service items.
Practices would get $950 per patient on average, plus access to a further $10,800 on average depending on factors such as the number of patients they enrol, and the attainment of various performance measures.
The AMA had already accused ministers of failing to consult with the medical profession before announcing the revamp, due to be rolled out...
