Local governments are being called to act urgently to tackle type 2 diabetes, as figures show a surge in the number of areas now considered diabetes 'hot spots'.
According to figures released yesterday by Diabetes Australia-Victoria, the incidence of diabetes has doubled in Victoria in the past decade.
They have produced a new interactive map (http://www.diabetesepidemic.org.au/), showing there are now 64 diabetes hotspots –areas where more than 4% of the population has the disease – up from just one at the start of the last decade.
The highest rates were in Greater Geelong (5%) and Brimbank (6.1%).
