There have been 150 complaints made against doctors under mandatory reporting laws in the first year of the new national registration scheme.
The latest annual report from the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA), said overall there were over 4000 complaints made against doctors during 2010-11, representing 51% of all the complaints made against health professionals.
Of these, 150 complaints were made under the mandatory provisions – which give whistleblowers protection from legal action if the complaint, provided it was made in good faith, turned out to be false.
National laws requiring health professionals to report colleagues who are suspected of putting patients at serious risk of harm have been in place since 2010.
