Safety fears allayed by latest FIELD data

Previous concerns over the safety of fenofibrate in type 2 diabetes patients with renal impairment should be allayed by the latest data from the FIELD study, Australian experts say. Writing in Diabetes Care, the study investigators, including endocrinologist Tim Davis from Perth and cardiologist David Celermajer from Sydney, said previous safety concerns with the drug, particularly around renal impairment, had resulted in guidelines recommending, “substantial dose reduction (between 30 to 69%) when renal function is impaired”. However, the authors say that their current findings may allay these fears, and suggest that the thresholds in the current guidelines may be too restrictive.   “Fenofibrate dose reductions may not be required until eGFR falls below 30mL/min/1.73 m²,” they wrote.
