A study from Taiwan has linked hyperthyroidism in people aged under 45 with increased risk of ischaemic stroke.
The study of over 3,000 young adults found that the risk of having a stroke during the five-year follow-up period was 44% higher for patients with hyperthyroidism than for those without it.
Hyperthyroidism may be associated with various syndromes or conditions linked to cerebrovascular disease in young adults, the study authors said, but only case reports or case series were found in the literature, and the causal relationships could not be established.
