Miscarriage and stillbirth a marker of future CVD risk

A history of more than three miscarriages is associated with a nine-fold increase in a woman’s future risk of myocardial infarction, and a history of stillbirth with a three-fold increase, a new study shows.
Almost 12,000 women aged between 35 and 66 living in Heidelberg, Germany, were enrolled as part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) and followed for 11 years.
There were 25% who had had at least one miscarriage, 18% at least one abortion, and 2% at least one stillbirth.
Each stillbirth increased the risk of myocardial infarction 2.65 times — a figure reduced only marginally after accounting for other risks such as age, smoking status, BMI, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes.
