Safety of statins in pregnancy analysed

Statin use in pregnancy is not associated with any clear increase in congenital anomalies but more data are needed before their safety can be established, a Canadian study has concluded.
Health care databases in Quebec were used to define three groups of women who had a live birth: 64 who were prescribed statins in the first trimester, 14 who were prescribed fibrates/nicotinic acid in the first trimester, and 67 who stopped statins between one year and one month before conception.
There were a total of 13 congenital anomalies identified in the babies - a rate similar to that in the general population — and no significant differences between the three groups.
