Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have high levels of anxiety, depression and negative body image, which is exacerbated by the length of time taken to be diagnosed with the disease, an Australian study finds.
Researchers from Monash University noted that up to 64% of women with PCOS had depression and up to 57% had anxiety.
Furthermore, their own study, published in Human Reproduction showed anxiety and depression were generally more severe in women with PCOS compared with the general population.
The study compared 177 women with PCOS (average age 33) to 109 matched controls, and found different factors were linked with anxiety and depression between the groups.
