Catholics nun the wiser over Pill to prevent cancers

An Australian health expert has championed the plight of nuns urging the Catholic Church to provide the contraceptive pill free to these nulliparous women at high risk of ovarian and uterine cancers compared with women who bear children.   A comment published in The Lancet  argued that nuns should be free to use the contraceptive pill to protect against the risk of nulliparity since the Humanae Vitae states “the Church in no way regards as unlawful therapeutic means considered necessary to sure organic disease, even though they also have a contraceptive effect.”   The comment by Dr Kara Britt, from Monash University in Melbourne and Professor Roger Short, from the University of Melbourne, highlighted US cancer mortality data in 31,658 nuns...
