Bariatric surgery should remain ‘last resort’: Diabetes Australia

Despite its growing popularity, bariatric surgery is not without risks and should still only be considered when lifestyle measures and medical treatments have been unsuccessful, Diabetes Australia has said in a position statement aimed at helping people decide whether surgery is appropriate for them.  “While [bariatric] surgery should always be considered as a last resort, more people have reached that position than ever before, so surgery is increasingly being viewed as a viable option – although not without dangers,” CEO of Diabetes Australia Lewis Kaplan said.
