Older men with thyroid dysfunction should be evaluated for hip fracture risk, say the authors of a large study that found both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were independent predictors of hip fracture.
The study of over 3,500 of adults aged over 65 years found that during the follow-up period of 13 years there was an estimated 13% attributable risk of hip fracture due to thyroid dysfunction in older men.
Men with subclinical hypothyroidism had a multivariable-adjusted HR of 2.31 (95% CI, 1.25-4.27); whereas those with subclinical hyperthyroidism had an HR of 3.27 (0.99-11.30), the researchers reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
